The Newsletter - Issue 8

A few weeks ago, on the Warrior Forum, there was a long discussion about e-books vs. videos. Both have their pros and cons.

PROS AND CONS OF E-BOOK VS. VIDEO

Most people like an e-book because they can skim-read and quickly skip to the information that interests them. Too many times, videos and audios ramble on with lots of unnecessary preamble, before actually getting to the meat of the information. Without text, the customer is forced to waste their time listening to all, just to find one piece of useful information.

However, videos are a great way to teach something that needs visual cues. Teaching how to use certain software, do a craft, paint a picture -- these all benefit from the visual guidance of a video.

And, having an audio interview with an expert in a certain field can provide your customers with lots of valuable information - directly from the expert's mouth.

So, how can you please the customer who wants to skim through info, but could also benefit from the visual cues of video?

CREATE A TRANSCRIPT OF YOUR VIDEO OR AUDIO

It doesn't take much to provide a transcript of your narration, and it adds so much value to your video or audio product. Suddenly, you're pleasing the visual learner and the skim reader.

You can easily include a transcript as a PDF file, and place it in a ZIP file with your audios or videos.

There are two ways to create transcripts.

SCRIPT YOUR VIDEOS AND CONVERT TO PDF

I script most of my videos. I find that taking the time to type up my narration before recording it ensures that I create a smooth, professional audio track for my videos. It avoids a lot of "hemming" and "hawing".

Since I've already typed up the script, it doesn't take much to simply convert it into a PDF file, using software like Open Office.

You can get this open source software for free from:

http://www.openoffice.org

HAVE YOUR AUDIO TRANSCRIPTED

If you're conducting an interview, or narrating on the fly, you won't have ready-made transcript. Typing up your narration after the recording is not a good use of your valuable time, so ... outsource it.

It's quite easy to find someone who will type a transcript for you at a reasonable price. A good place to look is at Elance. Go to:

http://www.elance.com

There you want to place an ad for "Transcription". State exactly what you want done. Here's a good example:

__ minutes/hours of audio to transcribe.

Please transcribe word for word and mark the speakers (2 people).

A simple task for those who can do transcriptions.

Please finish as a Word file.

This ensures that the job is well understood by those who bid
on it.

When you get the transcript, proofread it and make any corrections. Remember, your transcribers may not know certain "industry" words. I once read a transcript where the transcriber wrote "paper clips" for "Pay Per Click", LOL.

NEXT WEEK

If you  got your hands on my WSO about recycling articles at You Tube, you'll be interested in my latest video. It was made in much the same way - simply using photographs - but it comes across quite powerful. Makes a great promo video:

Next week, I'll be giving you a complete step-by-step walkthrough of how I created that video. Keep your eye out for next week's issue. You don't want to miss that - video is a great way to pre-sell.
